One of my main environmental projects is establishing winter-active Bubas bison dung beetles across the Narrabri region. There is currently no strongly effective winter-active dung beetle filling the seasonal gap across Narrabri Shire and surrounding areas, meaning livestock dung can remain on the surface for much longer during the colder months.

Bubas bison is a deep-tunnelling species that buries dung into the soil, helping move nutrients and organic matter below the surface while creating tunnels through the soil profile.

Benefits include:

• Improved water infiltration by creating channels that allow rainfall to move deeper into the soil.

• Reduced surface runoff, helping slow the movement of water across paddocks during heavy rainfall and flood events.

• Better water storage in the soil, helping retain moisture for longer during dry periods and drought.

• Improved soil aeration through deep tunnelling activity.

• Reduced soil compaction and improved pathways for plant roots.

• Improved nutrient cycling by moving livestock dung and organic matter directly into the soil.

• Increased access to nutrients and moisture within the plant root zone.

• Faster breakdown and removal of livestock dung from the soil surface.

• More usable pasture by reducing the amount of ground covered by old dung pats.

• Reduced breeding habitat for some pest flies and livestock parasites.

• Improved overall soil structure and biological activity.

My work involves establishing breeding nurseries, releasing beetles onto farms and monitoring colonies as they become established. The long-term aim is to build self-sustaining populations that can reproduce and spread naturally, gradually filling the winter dung beetle gap across the region.

I provide grant writing support for community organisations, schools and small not-for-profit groups that need help turning an idea into a fundable project.

This can include finding suitable grants, checking eligibility, developing the project, preparing budgets and timelines, organising quotes, drafting supporting documents and making sure the application clearly addresses the funding criteria.

I work across a wide range of areas including community infrastructure, Aboriginal programs, agriculture, environment, arts, education, youth activities, digital inclusion, local events and community services.

Regional projects also need to be written with regional communities in mind. Smaller populations, limited services and greater travel distances can all affect how a project should be explained and assessed. I make sure that local context is clearly included rather than treating regional projects like metropolitan ones.

The service is designed so organisations do not need to pay out of pocket, the grant writing fee is included within the project budget, with payment only required if the grant is successful.

My art work includes paintings, commissioned pieces, murals, steel sculptures, public installations, workshops and event-based projects.

I work across different materials and styles depending on the project, including painting, UV-reactive artwork, digital design, hessian, mixed media and artworks incorporating preserved insects and other invertebrates.

Larger public projects have included the Wedge-tailed Eagle and Sand Goanna sculptures at the Narrabri Visitor Information Centre, along with A New Journey, the UV mural at Wee Waa High School.

The mural was designed with input from students and Helen Wenner and includes images showing changes in school life, wildlife, Aboriginal night-sky stories and student ideas. Some elements, including student handprints, only appear under UV light.

I also run creative workshops for schools, community groups and events, including painting, UV art and other hands-on activities.

Event and installation work has included large inflatables, interactive technology, temporary public artworks and large-scale hessian works created for Narrabri CREATE.

Projects can range from a single commissioned artwork through to a larger public installation involving design, workshops, fabrication and community participation.

I deliver native animal shows and wildlife education activities for schools, community groups and events.

These activities give people the chance to see native animals up close while learning about their behaviour, habitat, threats and the role they play in the environment.

Wildlife care can also be included, covering what to do when an injured or orphaned animal is found, why different species require specialised care and how people can respond safely.

STEM workshops can be built around wildlife, insects, dung beetles, pollinators, soil health, water movement and biodiversity monitoring.

Activities can include pitfall trapping, insect identification, soil moisture monitoring, water quality testing, environmental sensors, data loggers and other hands-on equipment.

Programs can be delivered as a single workshop or as a longer project where students return to collect data, compare results and monitor changes over time.

The aim is to make wildlife and STEM practical, hands-on and connected to the environments people already live in.
